Instructions

  1. Smudging

    • 1

Smudge sticks are commonly made of the herbs that Wiccan believe to be beneficial: sage, lavender, cedar and sweetgrass. You can make your stick out of handful of one herb or a combination of the four. Tradition holds that sage, lavender and cedar offer protection, purification and wisdom, while sweetgrass can invoke good spirits.

    • 2

Abide by Wiccan beliefs when picking wild herbs. Never pick the first herb that you see. Instead, let the herbs know of your presence and intentions and ask for permission prior to picking. You might get strange looks if you do this at your local nursery.

    • 3

Place the herbs on a clean, dry surface. Roll them together and tie with a thread made out of a natural material, such as hemp or twine. Cut the smudge stick so that is five to nine inches in length and two inches thick. The smudge stick should be tie tightly together so that no herbs can separate from the stick.

    • 4

Light the tip of the smudge stick and extinguish the flame in either a bowl of sand or fireproof container. Hold your smoky smudge stick as high as possible in every corner in every room of your home. Maintain a healthy trail of smoke--the smoke of the beneficial herbs will cleanse your home

    • 5

Confirm that the smudge stick is no longer smoldering and place in a bowl of sand or fireproof container until needed. You should now feel calm, relaxed and ready for whatever life may bring your way.

Tips & Warnings

  • While smudging, keep your mind free of negative thoughts. Also, be mindful of your smoke detectors. Setting off a loud buzzing smoke alarm won't be beneficial. Feel free to smudge yourself.

  • The smudge stick should be tied together tightly. You will be lighting this on fire and then extinguishing the flame, so you don't smoldering herbs falling everywhere.
