How to Use Salt to Rid a Home of Fleas

There are many pesticides that one can use to kill the fleas on a pet and in a home. These pesticides, however, contain harsh chemicals. There is no need to use these chemicals when natural products work just as well to get rid of fleas. One of those products is salt. Salt works to pierce the skin of the flea so that it cannot retain fluid. This causes the flea to quickly dehydrate and die.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum all of the furniture in your home and then set it aside so that you can vacuum the floors. It is important that you vacuum under all of the furniture because fleas love to live under the shadows of the furniture.

    • 2

Tie your vacuum cleaner bag up in a garbage bag and immediately dispose of it in an outdoor trash can.

    • 3

Sprinkle the floors in your home with salt just before you go to bed. Cover the entire floor. You will want to do all of the floors except your bedroom. Keep your pet in your bedroom while you do this.

    • 4

Vacuum the house in the morning. Again, dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag garbage bag.

    • 5

Sprinkle the salt in your bedroom and keep your dog out of the bedroom. Do this first thing in the morning. At night, before bed, vacuum up all of the salt and dead fleas in your bedroom and dispose the vacuum bag in a sealed trash bag.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can kill the fleas on your pet by giving it a bath. Lather your pet up with some shampoo, and keep it on the pet for 5 minutes before washing it off. Fleas can't live any longer than that in soapy water. Just rinse the soap and the dead fleas away.

  • Fleas may be inside some of your furniture if it is made of fabric. You can repel fleas from those items by making a flea repellent. Fill an empty spray bottle with warm water and add ten drops of cedar essential oil. Spray your furniture with it. Fleas hate the smell of cedar.
