Instructions

    • 1

Gather enough newspaper to cover the tile in question. Single-ply newspaper should be sufficient for ceramic walls and floor tiles.

    • 2

Cut several 2-inch strips of blue painter's tape and place them on the outer portion of your hand. Right-handed people put tape on the left hand; left-handed people put the tape on your right hand.

    • 3

Start at one corner of the bathroom. Hold and flatten out a sheet of newspaper with the tape hand and tape it into place on the wall or floor with the free hand. Continue adding newspaper sheets in one direction, overlapping them about one inch, and taping as you go. Add more tape to your hand as needed. This procedure will work for walls as well as for floors.

    • 4

After several sheets are in place, using long strips of tape, completely tape the top and bottom borders of the newspaper and also where paper overlaps. This will prevent loose debris, nails, and other articles from getting trapped inside the paper. If anything with a hard or sticky surface gets between the paper sections, and then stepped on, the damage to the tile may be significant. Continue alternating between applying single sheets with small tape strips, and tape-bordered sheets until the entire wall or floor is covered.

Examine your work periodically while the remodel is underway. Check for holes in the paper and then tape more on as needed. You can just lay a new piece of paper on top of the old and then tape it up. Just be sure no debris or matter is trapped under the paper.

When your bathroom remodel is complete, just tear the paper and blue painter's tape away from the floor and walls and recycle it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using a large roll of brown paper will minimize the amount of blue painter's tape used in this project, and may also provide a stronger cover than newspaper.
