Make a Felt Doughnut
Make a Felt Doughnut

I bought a wooden kitchen for my toddler, for Christmas this year, and now I'm making felt food to go with the present. Every time I complete a new piece I am amazed to see that it actually looks like real food. Felt is a wonderful material to work with. This piece explains how to make a felt doughnut.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a bowl and a bottle cap (to trace circles)
  • 1 piece brown felt
  • 1 piece pink or white felt
  • needle
  • brown & white thread
  • beads or embroidery floss
  • stuffing
  • an ink pen
  • scissors
  1. Step 1

Using a bowl and pen to trace the design, trace and cut out two 5 1/2" circles of brown felt. Put the two pieces on top of one another, place the bottle cap into the center of the circle, and trace and cut this circle as well. It will serve as the hole in the center of your doughnut.

  2. Step 2

Use the same bowl to trace and cut out one circle of the pink or white felt that will serve as your icing. You can use whatever color you like, of course. You could choose to make the doughnut itself white, and the icing brown or yellow.

Trim the circle to create wavy edges, so that it will look like icing. Finally, use the bottle cap to trace and cut out a small circle in the center of your icing.

  3. Step 3

On the brown felt, sew a border along the outer circumference of the circle, leaving a hole for the stuffing. Don't sew the little circle just yet. Turn the doughnut right side out. Now to sew up the hole in the middle, using a whip stitch. Pack the doughnut tightly with stuffing and sew the small hole that you left shut.

  4. Step 4

Stitch beads or embroidery sprinkles into the icing piece of felt. Finally, pin the icing on top of the doughnut and whip stitch it into place. If you find it awkward to stitch on the icing after you've stuffed the doughnut, you can, alternatively, add the sprinkles and stitch the icing on BEFORE you sew the two doughnut pieces together. You would then sew the icing so that it is initially on the inside, between the brown felt. When you turn the doughnut right-side out, you will pull the icing onto the outside.
