Prevent Overspending at Christmas
Prevent Overspending at Christmas

Christmas is often the most expensive time of the year for most people, and many tend to overspend on both gifts and decorations. Fortunately if you start early and shop throughout the year, Christmas can be relatively inexpensive.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Xmas lists
  • Money
  1. Step 1

    Start Early on Gifts
Instead of running around paying top dollar at the last minute, get an idea of what you intend to get people a few months out. During off peak shopping seasons, you can generally get a lot of things much cheaper than you can during the winter.

Sometimes is isn't easy to tell what children will want nearer the time for Christmas, but the smaller gifts can usually be bought at any time of the year. Shopping year round also allows you to choose gifts more carefully.

  2. Step 2

    Shop Around More
So long as you are shopping earlier, it should be a lot easier to shop around for each item that you are looking for. Price comparison sites as well as looking in stores close to you should mean you can make substantial savings over just buying as you see things.

  3. Step 3

    Saving on Decorations
The best time to buy both Christmas trees and decorations is just after Christmas, so remember to stock up on anything of this nature that you need at this time rather than before Christmas when the prices will be back up.

This shopping pattern should also be used for items such as wrapping paper, labels and the like also.

  4. Step 4

Put Money Aside Throughout the Year
Many people find that saving through the year in a separate account is easier than trying to keep money aside yourself. an easy way is to set up a standing order from each pay check to be sent to the Christmas account so that you don't even have to remember to pay into it yourself. Keeping the money in there throughout the year will also allow a little interest to build up, particularly if the account is an online savings rather than checking account.
