Create a Homework Center for Children

Any teacher will tell you that it's important for children to have a specific place to do homework each night. And while many children have their own rooms, this is not necessarily the best place to do homework. It's often beneficial to setup a homework station somewhere else in the home so that parents can provide frequent encouragement and assistance.

Things You'll Need:

  • Light
  • School supplies
  1. Step 1

Find an unused location in the home. Look for corners that you can place a desk in, or a bar in the kitchen or den that isn't used often. You can even convert pantries or closets into homework centers by placing a desk and shelving inside of them.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that the location has easy access to electricity. Since most children use a laptop at some point, the homework center location needs to have an electrical outlet and internet connection nearby.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the area has adequate lighting. Purchase a table or floor lamp to increase light if needed.

  4. Step 4

Stock the area with the supplies that children need. Make sure the location has pens, pencils, paper, crayons and any other items that children need frequently. Having these items nearby prevents the child from getting up frequently and possibly getting distracted.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the area is free of televisions, radios, cell phones and other distractions. Although absolute quiet isn't necessary, removing most music and electrical devices is a must.
