If you are preparing for a CT Scan of your neck, head, GI tract or any other part of your body, you may be a bit nervous if you have never had one before.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The CT scan machine looks like a large doughnut with a stretcher that moves through the opening. Many images of CT scan machines can be found on line. Viewing these images may help you with some of your anxiety.

Unlike an MRI, your body is not is not completely surrounded by a machine.

  2. Step 2

If your doctor has requested a CT scan with contrast, be sure to tell your doctor and your CT technician about any allergies you may have before the CT scan.

If you have severe food allergies or medication allergies, you may be at risk for a reaction to the contrast dye. Many facilities and hospitals require that you take preventative medication including Prednisone (steriods) and Benedryl (anti-histamine) for 24 hours before you get the injection.

  3. Step 3

Do not wear any metal jewelry to your appointment. If you do, you will be asked to remove it and you may not feel comfortable leaving it where they ask you to. This includes any body piercings.

  4. Step 4

Most insurance companies require authorization before this test. Be sure your insurance has authorized this CT scan before you go in for your test or you may be responsible to pay for this test.

  5. Step 5

Do not forget to bring your prescription and insurance card with you. If you don't have them, you will probably not be able to have the CT scan performed on you.

on 11/2/2009 Great article to prepare you for having a CT scan done. I've seen them but I've never had one! I HAVE had an MRI however and from the time they slid me in until 45 minutes late when I was done I NEVER opened my eyes!! I didn't want to panic inside that tube!! It worked though! :)
