The swine flu is more dangerous for pregnant women, especially those younger than age 35. Because the immune system may be slightly compromised during pregnancy, the H1N1 swine flu virus is more likely to cause severe flu symptoms in pregnant women. Influenza immunization, and healthy practices will help to keep you safe from swine flu infection.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep your immune system strong. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and take a pre-natal multivitamin to stay healthy during pregnancy. Because swine flu is most likely to attack those with weakened immune systems, staying healthy is your best defense against H1N1.

  2. Step 2

Wash your hands often, and keep your hands away from your face. Avoid touching surfaces when you are at the doctors office, or in most public places. Surfaces may be able to carry the swine flu virus for 48 hours or more. Carry a pen for personal use, and keep antibacterial hand wipes handy.

  3. Step 3

Consider vaccination. Doctors do recommend that pregnant women get a flu vaccine to protect themselves against the swine flu. Flu vaccines are considered safe by most doctors, and because of swine flu complications in pregnant women, they are considered high risk. Even with a vaccine shortage, high risk patients can usually get the flu vaccine quickly.
