How to Freeze Ginger Root

Ginger root is actually a stem called a rhizome, and not actually a root. It is light brown in color and knobby in shape. It is used for making such things as gingerbread and gingersnap cookies. Ginger is also well known for its ability to aid in the digestion process and to alleviate upset stomachs. Ginger root can be stored temporarily in a refrigerator, but if you'd like to keep it longer, follow these directions to keep it up to three months in the freezer. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Ginger root
  • Knife
  • Sherry wine
  • Freezable storage container
  • Freezer

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut the skin off your ginger root and discard it.

    • 2

      Place the ginger root in a freezable storage container.

    • 3

      Fill the storage container the rest of the way with sherry wine.

    • 4

      Close the lid and write the current date on the outside. Or mark it with the expiration date: three months from the date you are putting it in the freezer.

      Set the container in the freezer until you need to use it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ginger can be stored temporarily in the refrigerator in the same way as the freezer, or dry inside of a plastic zip-top bag.

  • Ginger also helps with motion sickness.

  • Don't throw away the sherry wine after you use the ginger root. It makes for a great seasoning.
