How to Siphon Gas From a Lawnmower Tank
Gas is expensive, so you might run your gas tank down lower then you would have in the past. Because of this, you might find yourself at home at some point and realize you probably don't have enough gas to drive to the nearest gas station. However, if you have a lawnmower, you can siphon gas from the lawnmower's tank into a portable tank and add it into your car. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Position the lawnmower on an elevated step or similar platform. You need the gas tank of the lawnmower to be off the ground. If you have a patio or porch that is higher than the actual ground, this is ideal.
-
2
Dip your hose into the gas tank of the lawnmower. A garden hose is going to be too large to fit into the lawnmower. A 3/8-inch hose you would use for beer/wine making would suffice nicely and can be purchased at most home brewery stores. Make sure it is under the gasoline level. As long as the hose is properly pushed down into the tank and you don't need your hands to hold it in, the hose should be under that level.

3
Allow the hose to come out of the lawnmower's gas tank and loop downwards towards the ground. You need this area below the gas tank to properly siphon the gas.
-
4
Wrap your mouth around the other end of the hose, and begin to suck on it. You should begin to see the gas flow out of the tank. Continue to suck the hose. The gas flow is going to level off once it reaches the same height in the hose as it is in the gas tank. Once this level is reached, you can stop sucking on the hose, and the gas won't funnel back down into the tank. Consult the reference below for more information.

5
Take the other end of the hose and position it own into the portable gas tank. Keep the portable gas tank below the level of the lawnmower. The gas is now going to flow down into the portable tank. Wait for all of the gas to drip down into the portable tank, then remove the hose.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure the lawnmower is off when you raise it onto a step or patio. You might want additional help to raise the lawnmower without tipping or dropping it.
If you continue to suck the gas past the level-off, point it is possible to take in a mouthful of gasoline. Spit this out and immediately rinse out your mouth with water. Avoid swallowing the gasoline if at all possible.
