How to Choose Car Emergency Kits
As a motorist, you may experience an accident or other emergency situation while on the road. If so, you'll need to treat any injuries you might sustain. While not all car emergency kits are equal, a good kit will always contain a few basic staples like bandages and antibacterial ointments. 1
Consider the quantity of the kit's contents. The kit should be stocked with more than enough small and large bandages, pain relievers, antibiotic ointment and gauze to treat the maximum number of people that the car seats.
-
2
Consider additional tools that may be necessary to help in the treatment of minor wounds and injuries. Verify that the emergency car kit provides tweezers and scissors.
-
-
3
Compare the quality of non-perishable items that are provided within the kit. A good kit will provide high energy foods such as granola bars, raisins, peanut butter and MREs (meals ready to eat). Kits that contain sugary meal replacement bars or empty calorie foods are not preferable.
-
4
Choose an emergency kit that provides bottles of water with at least a 5-year shelf life. Consider how much water is provided and determine if this amount is sufficient to cover basic uses such as hydration, cleaning wounds and cooling an overheated vehicle.
-
5
Check for essential items that will make repairing a vehicle in the dark much easier. Look for items like a flashlight, light sticks, matches, pocket knife and tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers.
-
6
Consider safety. Choose an emergency car kit that provides road flares and reflective triangles.
-
7
Opt for additional items like rain gear, including umbrellas and ponchos; winter gear such as blankets, hats and gloves; and battery powered radios.
