How to Display Military Service Flags

Serving as an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense, the Service Flag may be displayed by families with members serving in the military during any period of war or hostilities. The Service Flag may also be displayed by an organization to honor its members serving in the military during a time of war. The flag has a solid thick border and a blue or gold star in the middle.       Display the Service Flag indoors only.

      Fly the flag facing out from the front window of the home or organization's building.

      Flying the United States flag along with the Service Flag is permitted. The United States flag should be of equal or greater size and should take the place of honor above the Service Flag.

      Position a gold star over the blue star on the Service Flag if one is added. The new gold star should cover the blue star closest to the staff and should be smaller than the blue star to create a blue border around it.

  • If you want to display the military flags of each branch, the order is Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
