How to Keep Knockout Roses Insect-Free

Knockout roses, appropriately named for their stunning appearance, are hardy and disease-resistant. Their large, beautiful blooms will enhance any garden. However, they are not immune to insect infestations. Aphids, mealybugs, leafhoppers, spidermites and whiteflies can quickly become big problems. These insects feed on the plant; left unchecked, they can cause serious damage and even death to your roses.

Things You'll Need

• Ladybugs
• 2 tsp dishwasher soap
• 1 quart water
• Spray bottle
• Garlic plants or cloves

Instructions

Removing Insects

1. Release ladybugs in the garden area. Ladybugs eat the insects. Ladybugs can be purchased from garden centers. They must be released in the evening, and they will not stick around if it rains. Plan your ladybug release accordingly.

2. Apply insecticide spray. A non-toxic solution can be made with dishwasher soap and water. Mix together in bottle and spray on plants to kill soft-bodied insects. Apply weekly. When spraying, pay special attention to the undersides of leaves.

3. Plant garlic near rose bushes in the spring. Aphids are repelled by garlic. As the garlic grows, it will deter the aphids from taking up residence on your roses. Alternatively, you can rub rose buds with cut cloves of garlic.

Preventive Maintenance

1. Remove any petals, leaves or stems that have been damaged by the aphids. This will reduce stress on your rose bushes.

2. Avoid spraying water on buds or leaves. Always water at the base of the plant.

3. Allow good airflow in between rose bushes. Don't plant them too closely together.

Tips & Warnings

• Whenever possible, chemical insecticides should be avoided. They will kill insects, but may damage your plant. Some chemicals also kill beneficial insects, leaving your plant more susceptible to future infestations.
