How to Repair Scratches in Linoleum Floor Tiles

Linoleum floors, vastly different in composition from petrochemical vinyl floors, are an earth-friendly flooring choice for many homeowners. Linoleum is made from layers of linseed oil that have been mixed with a compound of wood dust, limestone particles and other natural elements, and then laid out to dry. Layer upon layer of design are created and stacked on top of one another, making linoleum a quality product where the design of the flooring lasts for many years.
Many methods exist to improve the look and extend the life of your linoleum flooring.

Tips & Warnings
  • Maintain your linoleum flooring by applying one or two coats of polish before installation if possible. After installation, apply a layer of acrylic sealant once a year for maximum protection.
  • Linoleum is a porous material. Make sure you are using cleaning solutions that are designated acceptable to clean linoleum flooring.
  • Deep cleaning your linoleum flooring is a simple matter. According to Mrs. Clean USA, "Mix white vinegar (food grade) and water 50/50 in a spray bottle fill up a mop bucket with warm/hot water. Use the spray bottle to spray the vinegar solution on the linoleum floor. Mop the floor with the warm water in the mop bucket."
