How to Trim a Walking Cane
A reliable walking cane can be the valuable tool which makes the difference between being stuck in a chair or being freely mobile. In order for a cane to be at its best, however, it must be cut to match the height and posture of its owner. Fortunately, measuring a cane is a simple task, and cutting your cane down once the ideal size is found is likewise a task which does not require advanced woodworking skills.

Stand upright with your natural posture, while wearing a pair of shoes.

Let your arms hang with a relaxed bend in your elbows.

Measure the distance from the wrist of the hand which will hold the cane to the floor.

Mark a line on the shaft of the cane that is the distance from Step 3 away from the lowest point on the cane handle.

Cut along the line with a saw.

Sand the new bottom of the cane until it is smooth to prevent splintering.
