How to Make a Disc Cleaning Solution

If you frequently find yourself cleaning the CDs, DVDs and video games, you are probably tired of constantly buying special disc cleaner from the store. Not only is it expensive, but it can also be hard to find outside of electronics shops. Fortunately, it's very easy to make a simple disc cleaning solution at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Filtered or distilled water
  • Spray bottle
  • Dishwashing detergent

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a medium-sized spray bottle with filtered or distilled water. To distill your own water, simply heat it on the stove for several minutes until you see a rolling boil. Then remove the pot from heat and cover to cool.

    • 2

Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the water. It does not need to be more than three or four drops; if you see a thick foam forming at the top of the mixture, then you have added too much.

    • 3

Shake well and put aside. The mixture needs to be thoroughly mixed, and one or two good shakes should do the job. Be careful not to over-shake; this will create too much foam.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using your new disc cleaning solution is easy. Simply spray it on the surface of the dirty CD, then wipe gently with a damp cloth. This will get rid of fingerprints and other greasy stains.

  • Do not use this homemade disc cleaning fluid in a disc cleaning machine. These machines use a different type of liquid that bonds with the discs (rather than cutting grease), and using a homemade disc cleaner can permanently damage them.
