How to Elevate a Crib Mattress
You can elevate the crib mattress to help a baby in a variety of situations. Parenting expert Elizabeth Pantley says an elevated crib mattress can ease the discomforts of gastric reflux and ear infections. Also, for some babies it is more similar to being held in your arms and therefore more comfortable. In each situation, make sure you safely elevate the crib mattress. You may choose to elevate the mattress or the entire crib.
Things You'll Need

Mattress Platform
-
1
Remove all bedding and the mattress to expose the mattress support platform (the solid or wire piece that holds the mattress).
-
2
If the platform adjusts to accommodate a growing baby, leave the head side at the current position.

-
3
Lower the foot side one or two notches. According to Tracy Davenport, author of "Making Life Better for a Baby with Acid Reflux," the goal is to elevate baby's head at a 30 degree to 45 degree angle.

Make sure the mattress fits properly after your adjustment. There should be no more than two adult finger widths between the crib and mattress on all sides.

Place pillows, blankets, tuna cans or books under the mattress to achieve the desired angle.

Tips & Warnings
Tracy Davenport recommends placing a rolled up towel under the sheet towards where the baby's feet will be positioned. Secure the ends of the towel under the mattress. This will help keep the baby from sliding down the incline.
Discuss the safety issues of adjusting your crib with your health practitioner and agree on a plan together. Frequently check your modifications to make sure the crib is stable and safe.
