How to Transfer Contacts to Gmail

If you are switching to a Gmail account from another e-mail service, then you may want to use the same contact and address book information from your previous account. Google allows users to transfer contacts from a different e-mail service to their Gmail account using a built-in import tool. Before you can import your contacts in Gmail, you must save them in the CSV format.

Instructions

    • 1

Export the contacts from your old e-mail account as a CSV file, and save the data to your computer's hard drive. Exporting the data as a CSV file will convert it to a plain text document that Gmail can interpret.

    • 2

Go to the Gmail homepage (see Resources below) and log in to your Gmail account.

    • 3

Click on the "Contacts" link on the left side of the page to view your current Gmail address book.

    • 4

Click on the "Import" option at the top of the Contacts list.

    • 5

Hit "Browse" or "Choose File" and then navigate to the location of the CSV file that you saved in Step 1. Highlight the CSV file and double-click on it.

    • 6

Select which contact group you want to import the CSV data into from the drop-down menu.

    • 7

Click on the "Import" button to transfer the contacts to your Gmail account.
