How to Copy VHS Tapes to DVD Without a Computer

Many people are transferring copies of movies on aging VHS tapes to to more permanent DVD media using computers. While computers offer fairly simple methods of transferring VHS tape to DVD, sometimes using a computer is impossible. Fortunately, you can also use a VHS/DVD combination player to transfer VHS tapes to DVDs.

  • DVD/VCR combo player/recorder
  • Blank DVD media

      Insert the VHS tape you want to copy into the VHS side of the combo player.

      Insert a blank DVD into the DVD side of the player.

      Shift the combo player into DVD mode.

      Begin the copying process. Note that because each DVD/VHS player is different; you'll have to consult your manual to see how to do this. Typically there will be a button called "dubbing" that you can press to begin the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not try to copy a commercial VHS tape. Commercial tapes are designed in such a way that recorders are prevented from transferring VHS movies to DVD.

  • Make sure that the DVD media you purchase is compatible with your combo player. Some machines may use DVD-R media, while others may call for DVD+R discs--and still others will accept either. Consult your manual to determine what DVDs you can use.
