How to Clean Old Picture Frames

- Old picture frame
- Mineral spirits-based cleaner
- Soap
- Water
- 0000 grade steel wool
- Sponge
- Bottle brush
- Furniture wax

Using the sponge, wipe the frame with a soap-and-water solution to see see how much grime will need to be removed. Don't scrub too hard with the sponge; just remove the top layer of dust and debris.

Working with a small area of the frame at a time, dip the 0000 grade steel wool into a bit of mineral spirits-based cleaner and gently rub it over the frame.

Remove excess water and debris from the frame with the sponge before moving on to the next section of the frame.

Once most of the frame is clean, use the bottlebrush with some mineral spirits based cleaner to get into small cracks and crevices and any ornate carvings.

Using the sponge with a soap-and-water solution, wipe the frame down again to remove any remaining debris.

For a perfect finish, get a good furniture wax. Following the manufacturer's directions, apply a coat of wax to the picture frame and allow it to dry.
