How to Decorate a Fountain Garden

The melodic, soothing trickle of water falling over stones or into a pond is a refreshing sound in a garden setting. Adding a fountain to your garden increases the relaxation level of your quiet space. Fountains can be made from water sealed clay pots, fiberglass, stone or other natural materials. The style of your garden, whether an Asian Zen garden or a Greco-Roman classical garden or a modern flower garden, can be matched and enhanced by including a simple fountain that complements or becomes a centerpiece to the mood of your garden. Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the design of your garden and the potential location of one or more fountains. If your garden is established and you are adding fountains to it, make sure you have space to dig for the fountain and reservoir to make the fountain flow. You'll also need it near an electrical connection for the pump.

    • 2

Dig a hole to place the base of the fountain securely in the ground. Just in front of the fountain, dig a hole deep enough to hold your reservoir so its top will sit flush with the ground surface.

    • 3

Place the pump at the bottom of the reservoir attached to a brick or heavy stone with a thick rubber band or twine. Run the electrical cord and the hose up the sides of the reservoir. Make sure your hose/tube is long enough to run from the whole depth of the reservoir up into the fountain with a little slack.

    • 4

Cut a piece of non-rusting wire mesh to fit over the top of the reservoir with a few extra inches on each side. Bend down any sharp edges and lace the hose and plug through the mesh before finally pressing it down in the ground over the reservoir top.

    • 5

Place large stones on top of the mesh to decorate the fountain area and hide the mesh. Cover the whole area so that the hose and pump cord are both hidden well.

    • 6

Fill the reservoir and fountain with water. Start the water circulation by turning the pump on or plugging it in. Adjust the placement of the rocks and fountain to make sure the water runs back into the reservoir, not off into the soil.

    • 7

Repeat this process with different styles or additional fountains around your garden until you are content with the fountain garden.

Tips & Warnings

  • For small land fountains, turn off the fountain and drain the reservoir in late fall to avoid freezing and damaging the pump or reservoir.

  • Don't allow your reservoir to get empty of water or it can burn out your pump motor and stop working.
