How to Make a Diaper Bassinet

A diaper cake is a non-edible cake fashioned out of diapers. It looks like a traditional tiered cake with each level made out of rolled diapers. Usually, you will attach different small items like rattles or pacifiers to the outside of the cake for decorations. While a diaper cake is cute and growing in popularity, there are other ways to make a diaper cake that are more original. One easy version of the diaper cake is a diaper bassinet.

Things You'll Need

• 80 diapers
• Rubber bands
• 13-by-9-inch cake board
• Double-sided tape
• Small receiving blanket
• Decorative ribbons in different sizes and colors
• Lace
• Small silk rosettes
• Door wreath hanger
• Hot glue gun
• Tulle
• Small teddy bears on string
• Small stuffed animal

Instructions

1. Beginning with the top of the diaper, roll it inwards toward the bottom. Secure the diapers with a rubber band around the middle. Roll and secure all 80 diapers.

2. Using double-sided tape, attach the diapers vertically to the board. Leave a 1-inch border on the board. Attach the diapers in rows of three all the way around until you have created a rectangle with a rectangular hole in the center.

3. Fold the receiving blanket as close as possible to the dimensions of the hole in the center of the diapers. Place in it the hole and press down to flatten.

4. Using double-sided tape, adhere decorative ribbon around the inside of the hole to add detail. Around the outside of the diapers, attach a strip of lace using double-sided tape. Trim with the same ribbon you used on the inside. Attach flower rosettes and bows around the top of the cake.

5. Fasten a door wreath hanger to the board on one of the shorter ends of the rectangle using a hot glue gun. Attach the tulle to the top of the hanger with a length of ribbon. Drape the tulle over the outside of the diapers to create a canopy. Using hot glue, attach the same decorative ribbon you used for the diapers to the trim the tulle.

6. Create a mobile out of small teddy bears on strings. Fasten to the top of the hanger. Place a small stuffed animal in the center of the diapers.

Tips & Warnings

• Coordinate all the colors of the ribbons, blanket, roses and tulle to match the mother's bedding theme.

• You can use package ties or small ornaments for the mobile.

• You can also fill the center of the bassinet with other small baby items from the mother's registry.
