How to Remove Excess Carpet Glue
Because carpet glue is designed to form a strong, durable bond between carpeting and the flooring beneath it, it can be particularly difficult to remove excess glue. While wet glue is easier to clean up, you can remove dried glue by using a chemical solvent to return it to a softened state, which will make it easier to lift it away from carpeting or any other surface. While you may not be able to remove all glue splotches completely, testing a variety of solvents will increase your chances of success. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Blot the carpet or other surface with a paper towel to lift up as much wet glue as possible. Be careful not to rub the glue further into the carpet.
-
2
Saturate a sponge with white vinegar, and apply it to the glue splotch. If the glue has dried, leave the sponge in place for several minutes. The acid in vinegar will act as a solvent to soften and dissolve the glue. Remove the sponge, and blot away the glue with clean paper towels.

Spray the area with carpet shampoo, and use a stiff brush to work it into the carpet pile. If removing glue from a nonporous surface such as concrete, scrub the area with a dish detergent on a wet sponge instead. Blot with a sponge soaked in clean water to rinse, and use clean paper towels to absorb excess moisture.

If vinegar does not remove the glue, repeat the process using acetone nail polish remover, and wash and rinse the surface.

Tips & Warnings
Dissolve glue with a wide variety of solvents, including rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid, brake cleaner, paint thinner and brand-name removers like Goof Off. Try the above method of blotting and soaking to remove excess glue with any of these products. Test the product on a hidden part of the carpet or flooring first to make sure it doesn't stain.
Check if the carpet glue manufacturer recommends a particular solvent to remove its product. This information might be available on the manufacturer's website, or you can contact the manufacturer through the phone number or address printed on the product's container.
If all else fails, use a sharp pair of scissors to trim dried glue off the carpet pile. Trim as close to the glue splotch as possible to leave most of the carpet pile intact.
Solvents often are composed of toxic chemicals. When using any solvent, work in a well-ventilated room and keep children or pets out of the area until the carpet is washed, rinsed and dried.
Never mix different solvents. Always wash and rinse the carpet thoroughly before using another solvent.
