How to Recharge a Cold Air Intake

Cold air intakes are very common aftermarket accessories on tuner cars; they're inexpensive and easy to install. All intakes come with an external, conical filter that rests at the entrance of the intake's mouth that captures dirt and grime, preventing it from entering your engine. Naturally, these filters occasionally must be cleaned--or in automotive terms, recharged. This is an easy process that you can accomplish with chemicals that typically come packaged with intake kits.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the conical filter from the intake's pipe. This usually requires loosening the pipe clamp, keeping the filter secure with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Spray the filter with the cleaning spray until it is saturated, allowing it to penetrate the dirt and grime. Let it soak for about 10 minutes.

    • 3

Rinse the filter under a faucet until the cleaner has been completely washed out. To remove all the dirt, you may have to repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the filter is clean.

    • 4

Shake off any excess water, and allow the filter to air dry for about 20 minutes.

    • 5

Evenly coat the dry filter with the oil until it is completely darkened.

    • 6

Allow another 20 minutes for the oil to be absorbed into the filter medium.

    • 7

Reinstall the filter onto the intake.

Tips & Warnings

  • For extremely dirty filters, fill a bucket with soap and allow the filter to soak until most of the dirt is loosened and can be removed.

  • Filters are not generally expensive; if they are too far gone, consider replacing them.

  • Be certain the filter is dry before putting it back onto your intake, as any water sucked up into the engine can be detrimental to your car's health.
