Prepare for Acting Headshots

Acting headshots are one of the most important tools in an actor's arsenal. Over the span of a career, he or she might easily go through over a dozen different headshots, which translates in preparing for over a dozen different headshot shoots! So, how does the actor prepare for headshots?

Instructions

      Choose wardrobe.

The first important consideration when preparing for your acting headshots is your clothing. Since the picture will not likely show anything lower than your shoulders or mid-bust, it is really only necessary to worry about a shirt. Choose a shirt in a solid color, with a simple neckline that flatters your shape. Jewelry, if worn at all, should be kept to a minimum and not be distracting. A good rule of thumb when dressing for headshots is to keep wardrobe, hair, and accessories simple, so that nothing detracts from your face in the shot.

      Consider all the details.

Next, you'll need to plan your hair and makeup. If you're a man, this should be relatively easy- a natural, no-makeup look is best. Feel free to add, at most, a touch of concealer if you discover a pimple or other blemish on the morning of your headshots. For women, your look is likewise clean and natural, but you can wear makeup, and might seriously consider hiring the services of a professional makeup artist for your headshots. Makeup for photos is different from everyday makeup, so a professional artist will be able to ensure that you look your best. For both men and women, the hair should look clean, shiny, and healthy- without noticeable products or a style that overwhelms the picture.

Use the days before your shoot.

In the days leading up to your acting headshot shoot, you will want to treat your body as well as possible. Exercise, drink plenty of water, and get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. If you plan to get a facial or any other type of skin treatment, do it WELL before your shoot- you do not want to be experiencing any lingering redness or other skin reactions during your headshots. Avoid salty foods, which can cause water retention, and opt for foods rich in vitamins and water.

Be prepared when the big day comes.

On the day of your acting headshots, have all of your necessary supplies (wardrobe, etc) already ready to go, so that you will not be stressing out trying to locate missing items at the last minute. Eat a nutritious breakfast with plenty of protein. If there is time before the shoot, some people like to fit in a workout beforehand, to invigorate the body, get the blood flowing, and give the skin a healthy looking glow. Make sure you leave with plenty of time to make it to the studio, so that unexpected inconveniences like traffic jams don't rattle your nerves. Above all: RELAX, be confident, and be yourself. Confidence and a positive attitude will show through in your pictures!

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid any clothing, jewely, or hairstyles that are too trendy, as they will tend to date the picture.
