in a down economy, many people turn to education as a way to enter into new careers that have more jobs. Nursing is a perfect example; as the economy declines, nursing school applications increase. Nursing is a stable field with moderately high pay, and accelerated nursing programs can help people with non-nursing bachelor's degrees to become a full Registered Nurse in as little as eleven months. Learn how to find the right accelerated nursing program for your new career.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in anything but nursing
  1. Step 1

Go to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and find all accelerated nursing programs in your state and/or area. If you're willing to relocate for a specific college of nursing, look at the areas where you'll relocate for nursing school.

  2. Step 2

Check the admissions requirements for the accelerated nursing programs you're considering. If you meet the nursing school qualifications, move on to Step 3.

  3. Step 3

Attend open houses at the accelerated nursing programs of choice. Ask questions, talk to current students and faculty, and get a feel for the system. Every accelerated nursing program is different. Some are very emotionally supportive while other nursing schools are more research-focused and intellectual. Find the right fit for your nursing career goals.

  4. Step 4

Ask about financial aid. The accelerated nursing programs do not allow you to work, as the schooling requirements involve 40 or more hours per week of class time, clinical work, and research work. Student loans, scholarships, and grants for nursing school can help.

  5. Step 5

Decide whether to apply for accelerated nursing programs or whether to take a more traditional nursing school approach. Maybe a part-time nursing school path, or a traditional, slower curriculum is better for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time. You're making a huge financial and time commitment with an accelerated nursing program. Make sure it's the right choice for you.
