How to Make Hand Sanitizer

User-Submitted Article

With the threat of the H1N1 virus, and every other flu bug upon us, the use of hand sanitizer has become a must. Those small bottles we all carry around, can really add up to a big expense. Here is a really simple, cheap way to make your own hand sanitizer. It works at killing 99% of the germs just like the store bought kind. The great news is it only takes a couple household ingredients and just minutes to make.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • rubbing alcohol
  • Aloe Vera gel
  • Tree tea oil (optional)
  • Essential oil (optional)
  1. 1

Gather your supplies. You will need some small bottles to store your hand sanitizer in. You can reuse bottles you have or ask friends to save their bottles. You can also buy these sort of bottles at a craft store usually ten for a dollar or so.

  2. 2

Mix six parts alcohol with four parts aloe Vera. So, if you were making a large batch, you would mix 3 cups alcohol with 2 cups aloe Vera. If you were making a smaller batch, you could do 1 1/2 cup alcohol and 1 cup aloe Vera.

  3. 3

Mix these 2 ingredients well (you can now add your tree tea oil and/or essential oil if you wish- see tips below)

  4. 4

Pour your hand sanitizer into small containers and use as you would a store bought sanitizer.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add tree tea oil if you want a more potent sanitizer. Add 5-7 drops per cup of sanitizer
  • You can add essential oil to your sanitizer if you want a pleasant smell. Add 3-5 drops per cup of sanitizer.
  • Make sure you use the 5/3 ratio for the sanitizer to be effective.
