Step 1
The first thing you want to do is make sure your dog’s teeth are healthy and clean. Check teeth regularly to avoid expensive or painful dental problems. When tarter begins to build up on gum lines you can see the discoloration. Soon gums become red and inflamed. This is a common cause of bad breath and it is a warning that your canine friend needs to have those teeth scaled and cleaned.
-
Step 2
If the teeth are clean, problems may be caused further down the digestive system. Look for healthy bowel movements and lack of gas. If your dog is having problems with digestion, you may want to slowly change his or her diet to a more digestible brand dog food.
-
Step 3
Table scraps can often cause poor digestion and bad breath. Try to break the habit of feeding your dog human food.
-
Step 4
Some breeds of dog simply develop bad breath as they age even with clean teeth and healthy digestion. There are a number of breath-sweetening treats on the market that can help. An old cure is that of charcoal biscuits. These cookies absorb excess acid in the stomach. Since they can sometimes interfere with your dog’s nutrient absorption, feed them charcoal treats well before and after feeding time. Some brands that offer charcoal biscuits are ‘Sportmix’, ‘Robbie Dawg Organic Treats’, ‘Old Mother Hubbard’ and ‘Darford’.
-
Step 5
Look for other treats made for dog bad breath. There are many on the market. Most tend to contain parsley and mint and some contain baking soda. You will have to test out different products to see which your dog likes and which ones are most successful to treat your dog’s bad breath.
-
Step 6
In most cases dog bad breath is not difficult to treat and cure. If none of these treatments work, you may want to have your dog checked over by a good veterinarian. Rarely, bad breath can be a symptom of a more serious condition.
