How to Cure Insomnia With Scents

Scents have the power to evoke emotional responses. For example, you might smell a whiff of perfume and remember your first girlfriend because she always wore that fragrance, or you might smell smoke and know you need to exit a building. If you suffer from insomnia, you can use specific scents and aromas that evoke feelings of calm and relaxation to help you sleep.

  1. Cure Insomnia with Scents

    • 1

Purchase essential oils of calming scents. These are not the same as fragrance oils; essential oils are derived directly from herbs and plants. You can buy essential oils online or in health stores. Try chamomile, lavender or patchouli for a relaxing effect.

    • 2

Run a bath, and put a few drops (approximately 10) of the essential oil you've chosen into your bath water as it runs. Soak for 15 minutes or so before bedtime.

    • 3

Another way to help yourself relax at night is to put two or three drops of an essential oil on a handkerchief and then place the handkerchief inside your pillow case. You can also place an eye bag or pillow filled with lavender over your eyes, under your head or alongside you. You'll breathe in the fragrance all night, helping you both to get to sleep and stay asleep.

If you have access to an oil or aromatherapy diffuser, you can use your essential oils in this manner as well. To use a diffuser, put the required amount of essential oil into it and allow it to warm up. The heat from the diffuser will spread the scent of the essential oil around the area, turning your bedroom into a tranquil haven.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase candles or incense sticks that have been infused with essential oils to diffuse these scents around your room as well.

  • If you use something with a flame or heat, such as a candle or diffuser, make sure you blow it out or turn it off before you fall asleep.
