Instructions

  1. Dressing Up Curtains By Adding New Trim

    • 1

Wash and dry the curtain panels, or take them to be dry cleaned. This is optional, but the simple process of washing and drying sometimes fluffs up the fabric fibers and freshens the curtains.

    • 2

Measure the width of the curtain panel. Add 2 inches to this measurement. Measure and cut the selected trim to the adjusted width measurement.

    • 3

Using straight pins, pin the trim to the bottom hem of the curtain panel.

    • 4

Using a straight stitch on the sewing machine and thread to match the trim, sew the trim onto the curtain panel, tucking 1 inch of trim behind the curtain against the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 5

Hang curtains. Sew trim to the very center of the entire length of tiebacks for a coordinated ensemble.

Dressing Up Curtains By Adding a Scarf

    • 6

Turn a large, fringed scarf (prints work best) to its point so the square is diamond-shaped.

    • 7

Stand on a sturdy step stool and place the scarf, point down and aligned with the center of the curtains, over the top of the curtains and curtain rod.

    • 8

Spread the scarf out evenly over the top of the curtain and curtain rod. Arrange the fringe so that it hangs straight.

    • 9

Use straight pins to pin the scarf behind the curtain rod along the casing or grommets so that the scarf remains secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mixing and matching scarves in the same color family lend an individualized and interesting look to a room.

  • Take care when using step stools that the manufacturer's recommended weight allowance is used before standing on a stool. Make sure the stool is on a steady, flat surface.
