How to Create a Faux Window With Drapery

What do you do when you have a room with no window, or a wall with one off-centered window? You can create a faux window using drapery. This will cheer up the windowless room and add symmetry and balance to a one-windowed room. Creating the faux window is as easy as adding drapery to an existing window and will be just as satisfying once you've completed it. Keep in mind that the more you treat your faux window like a real window, the more it will look like one. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. How to Make a Faux Window

    • 1

Plan where you will make the faux window. If your room already has a window, stand back from that wall and find where another window would make the most sense architecturally. Measure the wall and decide how big you want the window to be.

    • 2

Use a pencil to mark (use small marks) the width and height of the faux window. The drapery should hang at least one foot higher than a window, so be generous in marking the height of the window. If the faux window will be in a low-ceiling basement, consider making the window the full height of the wall.

    • 3

Hang the curtain rod (using the screwdriver and any included hardware) along the height of the faux window and adjust it to the width of the faux window. Use a level to ensure the drapery will hang correctly.

    • 4

Attach the drapery to the curtain rod. The more drapery you use, the more realistic the faux window will appear. For example, consider adding a valance and sheer curtains behind the drapery.

Tips & Warnings

  • The hanging drapery will make it appear there is a window behind the curtain, when in fact there is not. However, you will not be able to open the drapery because it would show there is no window behind it. If you would like to increase the window illusion, mount a large poster behind the drapery. Add wood slats vertically and horizontally on top of the poster to make it look like window panes. Keep the sheer curtains closed over the poster when the drapery is open so that the faux window is not too obvious.

  • When choosing a poster, stay away from scenes that would obviously not be seen through that window. For an even more realistic touch, stand outside your house and take a picture of the scene that would be showing through your faux window. Enlarge the photo as much as you can and mount it with the wood slats.
