How to Prime & Paint Wood Windows
While raw wood can look rustic when it comes to window frames, paint adds a distinct personality to the look of the interior and exterior of your home. After preparing the window frame, apply both primer and paint to the wood. Choose a paint color that matches the color scheme of your home. For example, match the color of your front door when painting the exterior of your wooden window frames. In the end, you'll have a professional-looking paint job you accomplished by yourself.

1
Clean the window's wooden frames and glass panes before painting. Remove any dirt or debris using an all-purpose cleaner and a soft rag. Pay special attention to grooves and harder-to-reach areas. Allow surfaces to dry completely before applying primer. Clean the glass panes so painter's tape will stick to the surface.
-
2
Affix painter's tape around the edges of the wooden window frame, the perimeters of all glass panes and the siding or inside wall around the frame.
-
-
3
Open the window before painting. (Otherwise, you may not be able to open it after the paint dries.) Open sash windows halfway. For casement windows, open all the way; you'll need to paint the inside edges.
-
4
Apply primer, using a paintbrush no wider that the thickest part of the window frame. Use a small brush for thin parts of the frame. While the order of painting doesn't matter for sash windows, start on the inside edges of casement windows and work your way inward. Keep the window open until the primer dries.
-
5
Apply paint over the primer on the wooden window frame using a clean, dry brush. Avoid applying the paint thickly, as it will take longer to dry and will diminish the design of the frame. Let the paint dry completely before shutting the window.
-
6
Remove the painter's tape once the window paint has dried. Pull slowly to avoid damaging the finished result.
