How to Relight a Gas Water Heater
Nothing motivates you more than to wake up and take a nice hot shower in order to get ready for the day. The only problem is that sometimes the water in the shower is cold. When this occurs there's usually no need to fret, (unless you haven't paid your gas bill), because all it will take to get your shower hot and flowing again is for you to relight the spark. Lighting your pilot light on gas water heaters is simple and can save you a lot of time and money. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn off the gas for a few minutes. If your gas powered water heater is in a well ventilated room then waiting 3 to 5 minutes after you have shut off the gas should suffice. In smaller closets or rooms that aren't well ventilated, you will need to open a door or window to help trapped gas escape. This is a safety precaution to reduce the chance of explosion or fire due to a leakage or buildup of gas.

2
Push down on the gas valve and turn it to the 'pilot' position. Some types of water heaters will have separate red button to push down after you turn the gas back on. Gas will begin to flow through the supply tube once you do this.

3
Light the opening of the tube where the pilot light is usually on while still holding down the button or valve. Use either a match or a lighter to relight the flame. Most water heaters will have instructions or pictures to show you exactly where the tube is located. Generally speaking, the pilot light opening will be easily identified and visible. Remember that it may take a few seconds for the flame to 'catch' the gas.

4
Hold down the valve or button for at least 30 to 60 seconds after the pilot is relit. While you're holding down the valve, you will be waiting for the thermocouple to heat up sufficiently. Once the thermocouple heats this sensor in your water heater should shut off gas.

5
Release the control button once the pilot light stays lit and turn it to the 'on' position. To be safe, wait around for the burner to ignite. You will also want to make sure your pilot light doesn't go out again. If it does, repeat this process.

Tips & Warnings
To shorten the time you wait after relighting the pilot light for the burner to ignite, simply turn your water heater's thermostat to a higher temperature. Return it to the prior temperature after it has ignited if you wish.
If your gas water heater pilot won't stay lit, it may be necessary to call in a professional from your local utility company.
This operation is dangerous, so be sure to follow all safety precautions on your gas heater.
