Things You'll Need:
- 6 oz. worsted weight yarn
- Size H crochet hook
- Ruler
- Scissors
-
Step 1
Leaving a six-inch tail, make a slip knot (see Resources) and place it on your crochet hook.
-
Step 2
Make a crochet chain the same length you want the scarf to be. Scarves are generally between 40 and 60 inches long.
-
Step 3
Leave a six-inch tail and fasten off after you make the last chain.
-
Step 4
Repeat step one and join the yarn with a single crochet in the last chain you made. Then single crochet in each chain back up to the first one. Fasten off, leaving a six-inch tail. These tails will become part of the scarf fringe.
-
Step 5
Repeat step one and join the yarn with a single crochet in the back loop first stitch of the previous row. From now on, you will be stitching in the back loops only and always with the right side facing you.
-
Step 6
Single crochet in each stitch across. Fasten off, leaving a six-inch tail.
-
Step 7
Repeat steps five and six until the scarf is the width you want. Generally, scarves are between five and six inches wide.
-
Step 1
Measure and then cut 12-inch lengths of yarn, two for each row you crocheted, to use as additional fringe.
-
Step 2
Fold a strand in half to form a loop, insert the crochet hook between two rows on the short side of the scarf and then hook the loop to pull it through.
-
Step 3
Pass the tails of the strand through the loop you just pulled through. Tug on the ends to tighten the fringe around the edge of the scarf.
-
Step 4
Repeat steps two and three to fill in fringe between the long tails left at the beginning and end of every row.
-
Step 5
Trim the fringe even on both ends of the scarf.

on 11/4/2009 I like this pattern because it's simple and flexible, and I like the specificity in step five; it's nice to know how to make the texture consistent throughout the scarf.
