How to Find a Nursing Home for the Uninsured

Long-term care insurance should be an important part of one's planning. It's not always possible to be prepared for life's eventualities. If you face the prospect of placing a loved one with no insurance in a nursing home, there are some guidelines that will make the job easier.

Preparations

1. Gather all of the person's paperwork. This should include bank statements, verification of income, proof of assets and any outstanding medical bills.

2. Apply the person for Medicaid and indicate the need for placement at a nursing home. All 50 states except Arizona participate in the Medicaid program. Your local program can be accessed through the local social services agency.

3. Ask the social worker assigned to the case for a list of nursing homes that have a bed available. Because Medicaid patients are not entitled to a private room, there could be a wait for an open bed.

4. Evaluate each nursing home that's under consideration. The government's Medicare website contains a list of nursing homes with facility reviews and complaint records. (see resources below)

5. Place the person in the home that's the best fit. Visit often and unannounced at varying times of day. This approach will help insure that your loved one is receiving consistent care at the nursing home.
