How to Wear Shawls

Shawls are versatile, stylish cool weather accessories. Shawls are wider than a scarf but have a similar length. Shawls are made in a variety of fabrics, from polyester blends to silk, making them good for many different occasions. Although shawls are functional in that they protect the wearer from the cold, they can also be worn indoors and as a complement to different outfits, even without a jacket or coat.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Shawl
    • Brooch or pin
    1. The European Knot or Noose Wrap

      • 1

Gather the shawl so that it is narrow like a scarf. Fold the shawl in half.

      • 2

Place the shawl over your neck so that on your chest is the folded end on one side and the unfolded ends on the other.

      • 3

Pull the unfolded ends through the folded end and tighten the loop around your neck.

      The Stole Wrap

      • 1

Place the shawl over your shoulders.

      • 2

Throw one end over your shoulder. You should be covering most of your chest with the shawl.

      • 3

Pin the shawl into place with a pin or brooch near the shoulder.

      The Sarong Wrap

      • 1

Place the shawl around your hips, allowing the full width of the shawl to hang down.

      • 2

Position the ends to be on one side of your hips.

      • 3

Tie a loose knot at the side of the hip.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Experiment with other styles of tying your shawl, such as using it like a regular scarf or wearing it hooked over your elbows, off the shoulders and trailing behind your back.

    • The sarong style will add a bulky look to the hips.
