How to Install Call of Duty 4

Call of Duty 4 is a first-person action game. Players control a variety of characters in the single player campaign and a custom character in the multi-player portion of the game. Call of Duty 4 uses realistic weapons and puts the player in realistic combat environments and situations. Call of Duty 4 is available in PC-DVD format, meaning it can only be installed using a DVD drive. Call of Duty 4 is also available on SteamPowered.com--a free content delivery service. Using SteamPowered.com, Call of Duty 4 can be downloaded over your Internet connection and stored on your hard drive. A CD key and all the game's content are available via Steam.

  1. Install with the DVD

      Insert Disc 1 of the Call of Duty 4 DVD. Click Start > Run > Browse.

      Pull down the drop-down box and select "Call of Duty 4." Look for and click the "Cod4.exe" file. The disc will begin to run and display the Call of Duty 4 logo. Read and accept the terms of the EULA (End-User License Agreement‎) to continue. Click "Next."

      Choose the directory you want to install the game in. For most users, this is the "C" drive (which the game highlights by default). If you wish to install to another drive, click "Browse" and select the drive of your choice. Click "Next."

      Decide if you want to install "Punkbuster." Punkbuster is an anti-cheat client used to detect and prevent cheating in the multi-player portion of Call of Duty 4. Not installing Punkbuster will not prevent you from playing the game, but you will not be able to join servers with Punkbuster enabled. Click "Install" to install Punkbuster or "Skip" to begin installing Call of Duty 4.

      Wait while the game installs. Depending on your DVD drive, this may take time. When prompted, insert Disc 2 and click "Next." After installation has finished, you will use Disc 2 to play the game.

      Launch SteamPowered.com (see link in Resources). Scroll down until you see Call of Duty 4.

      Click "Add to Cart." You will be prompted to enter your credit card information. After you confirm the purchase, Call of Duty 4 will begin to download.

      Click "Play" once the download has finished. You may be prompted to install any patches that have been released for Call of Duty 4.
