How to Draw Desert Plants

When you think of the desert, you probably imagine a hot sun and sand. The desert has plenty of hardy plant life, however. Desert plants are among the most resilient plants in existence. Some of the most famous desert plants are the columnar cactus, palm tree and wooly daisies. By following some simple steps, you will be able to draw a beautiful picture of the desert featuring all of these plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw one straight, long line to start the outline of your columnar cactus's main stem. Add two lines protruding from the side of your stem to create the "arms" of the cactus. Slope the arms upward but do not let them extend higher than your main stem. Create detailing lines around the outline to give your cactus its shape.

    • 2

Outline your palm tree by making a line to represent the length and shape of the trunk and lines at the top that show the placement of the palm leaves. Draw the palm tree leaves, angling them to match the lines of your original outline. Draw rectangles stacked length-wise along the trunk in order to capture the shape of the palm tree bark.

    • 3

Create a long line coming up from the ground (your stem) with a doughnut (the radius of the daisy bloom) on the top to start your outline for a wooly daisy. Add lines extending from the stem in order to represent any leaves you want coming from the stem. Thicken your stem and add the leaves to it.

    • 4

Add petals to your wooly daisy picture by starting the petal outside the small circle of the doughnut and extending the petals to the larger ring of the doughnut shape. Draw several small circles inside the small circle of the doughnut to help represent the pollen. Add small hairs on the stem and leaves of the daisy as well; these are what makes it wooly.

    • 5

Trace over all the new detail you have added to your plants with a pen. Do not trace over the shapes of the original outlines. Erase all remaining pencil marks once the ink has dried.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add ridges and spines to your cactus to make it look more realistic.

  • The rectangles on your palm tree trunk should get larger as you go down the trunk, towards the base of the tree.

  • Create thick palm tree leaves with ridges on the side. Three ridges per leaf should be what you need.

  • Wooly daisy leaves should be thin and about 1 1/2 inches long.
