How to Replace a Heater Element in a Whirlpool Clothes Dryer

The Whirlpool dryer, just like any other brand, uses a heating element to dry your clothes. When your clothes do not dry during the cycle, it is most likely caused by a faulty element. Most appliance repair stores will have a universal type heater element for replacement. You can also pick heating elements up at larger, big-box hardware stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord of the Whirlpool dryer from the dryer outlet.

    • 2

Insert the blade of a flathead screwdriver between the toe panel and front panel of the Whirlpool dryer. There are two retaining spring clips 4 inches from each side. Locate the spring clips with the screwdriver blade and push them in to release the toe panel. Set the toe panel away from your work area.

    • 3

Locate and remove the screw that fastens the heat shield to the heating can. The heating can is on the lower right side of the Whirlpool dryer. Unscrew the retaining screw of the heat shield using a Phillips head screwdriver. Flip the heat shield down to access the heater element.

    • 4

Remove the two wires connected to the heater element terminals using a pair of needle nose pliers. Grab the wires at the metal leads and pull---do not pull on the actual wire. Pulling on any part of the wire other than the metal leads could cause the wire to break.

    • 5

Locate the single screw on the left side of the heating can that fastens the heater element to the can. The screw is next to the round thermostat. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw. Use your fingers to pull the heater element from the heating can.

    • 6

Take the heater element and the model number of your Whirlpool dryer to the appliance repair store or hardware store. Compare the replacement element to the faulty element to make sure you get the correct part for your dryer.

    • 7

Slide the new heater element into the heating can. Fasten the heater element to the can by attaching the securing screw to the side of the heating can. Slide the two wires over the terminals of the new heater element.

    • 8

Shut the heat shield over the heating can and fasten it with the retaining screw. Place the toe panel back into position and tap it in with the palm of your hand until the retaining spring clips engage. Plug the Whirlpool dryer power cord back into the wall outlet.
