How to Use a Winch to Load an ATV

Riding quads and ATVs are fun, no matter where you go. But if your ATV gets damaged and isn't mobile, or if you need to move one without starting it, having a winch on your trailer can certainly make the job a little bit easier. When done correctly, this should take about 20 minutes to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the ATV towards the trailer and align it with the ramps so that it can be pulled straight onto the trailer. If you can't maneuver the ATV, then move the trailer around to accommodate the ATV.

    • 2

Pull out the line from the winch and secure it to the front of the ATV. Find a solid spot to mount the line, like the front bumper or one of the tow hooks that are usually located on the front of the ATV.

    • 3

Put the ATV in neutral if your model has one. This will allow the wheels to roll up the ramps.

    • 4

Activate the winch and slowly start moving the ATV forward. If it's damaged and you can't roll the wheels, then you may get some resistance from the winch. Be sure to keep clear of the cable, and don't stand over it, just in case it breaks.

    • 5

Continue to work the ATV up the trailer with the winch until it is completely on the trailer.

    • 6

Unhook the ATV from the winch and wind up the cable until it's retracted completely.

    • 7

Tie the ATV down to the trailer using ratcheting tie-down straps.
