How to Use Space Heaters Wisely

Space heaters can save you money and provide a quick or emergency source of heat when used wisely. Safe use is essential for all space heaters. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, space heaters account for 40 percent of deaths and 30 percent of the injuries in the U.S. that are heat related. Educating yourself and everyone in your household about space heater use is essential.

Instructions

1. Choose a new space heater with care. Avoid purchasing any heaters intended for outside use and that have open flames. Look for automatic thermostats, tip over switches and automatic shut offs. Choose convection heaters for large areas and radiant heaters for small areas.

2. Replace any space heaters that do not have built in safety features.

3. Keep paper, chemicals and fabric away from heaters.

4. Place your space heater at least three feet away from walls and furniture.

5. Verify that your electrical service is compatible with the heaters wattage before plugging it in.

6. Only use space heaters when you are home and awake. Do not allow children and pets near space heaters.

7. Unplug your space heater when not in use.
