How to Dress Like a Mermaid

The short and less-creative answer to dressing up like a mermaid is simply to buy a ready-made costume, sold at almost any Halloween or costume shop. However, shopping for a costume limits you to what the stores have in terms of size or shape, and store-bought costumes tend to be expensive.

Dressing up in a handmade mermaid costume allows you to save money and customize the costume as you like, and you probably have at least one of the costume items already.

Things You'll Need

• Flesh-colored leotard
• Bikini top
• Long, form-fitting skirt with ruffle at the bottom
• Long-haired wig (optional)

Instructions

1. Don the flesh-colored leotard (found at dance clothing stores).

2. Layer the bikini top over it. Choose a top that is sparkly or has a sea-life theme.

3. Put on the long skirt with the ruffle at the bottom to be the "tail." The skirt should be fairly form-fitting. A skirt in a blue or green material is best; a sparkly skirt is even better.

4. Add a long wig. During Halloween, these are sold at many drugstores for under ten dollars. Your handmade mermaid costume is complete.

Tips & Warnings

• If you can't find a sparkly skirt, sew some sparkly ribbons or fabric strips on the skirt's waistband to hang down, giving a similar effect.

• Add glittery makeup or face paint as you like and create an extra beautiful mermaid.
