How to Treat Ash Trees for Emerald Ash Borer
If you live in one of the states that have problems with the Emerald Ash Borer such as Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin, you need to check your ash tree. If your ash tree shows signs of the disease such as dieback of the branches or bareness of leaves, you will need to treat the tree. Before you save the tree, you should decide if the cost and treatment method is worth it or if it would be cost efficient to cut the tree down. Things You'll Need
- Bayer Advanced Garden, Tree and Shrub Insect Control
- Plastic pail
- Gloves
- Goggles

Inspect the tree and determine the extent of the disease. Trees that have early infestation are worth saving.

Buy the Bayer Advanced Garden, Tree and Shrub Insect Control from the local gardening shop. The application time is in the month of May to early June. Note: Make sure you see "Tree and Shrub" on the package and it must contain the active ingredient imidacloprid.

Put on gloves and goggles.

Mix the solution in a pail with water according to the directions on the package, which says to use one ounce of insecticide for every inch around the tree base. Be careful to mix the insecticide and water correctly.

Pour the mixture around the tree base going all the way around the base of the tree. Drench the soil so that the tree will absorb the insecticide.

Determine the tree base diameter in inches. If the tree base is 6 inches and the tree is a young tree, it may only need one application. If the tree is larger and older, two to three yearly applications may be needed.

This product is a once a year treatment plan, but may be needed every year for as long as three years depending on the age of the tree and the base size.
