How to Convert a Fridge to a Smoker

Refrigerators are great options for homemade meat smokers. They are already insulated well, have pre-installed meat racks and have the capacity to smoke a large amount of meat at once. Converting an old fridge to a smoker is not difficult and can save money if you are considering purchasing a smoker.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a hole through the back of the fridge into the lower compartment (where fruits and vegetables were once kept) and remove the two lower drawers.

    • 2

Place the hot plate in the area where the drawers used to be and pull its electrical cord through the hole you drilled. Load up the hot plate with the hardwood chips and plug the hot plate in.

    • 3

Drill a series of holes in the top of the fridge as well, to allow smoke and heat to dissipate.

    • 4

Load meat up on the racks and close the door. Check the meat periodically until it is cooked to your specifications.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when installing the hot plate as the insulation found on the inside of the walls of the refrigerator is flammable.
