1
Observe others at the gym and the way they use the equipment. Seek out individuals who look like they spend a lot of time at the gym and watch how they manage their way around. A great way to learn new exercises is to replicate what you see from others.
-
2
Read the instructions provided on the equipment. There are very few items at the gym that don't come with some sort of guide to help newcomers. Most exercise machines even have visuals to help you--diagrams that show each step of the exercises. These instructions are to help you get the best out of the exercises, and to help you avoid injuries.

3
Start new exercises with a very light weight or resistance. When running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike, start slow and work your way up. With a weight-lifting machine, begin very light and get a good feel for the motions. Starting easy and working your way to more resistance is not only good for warming up your muscles, it also will help prevent injuries or possible embarrassment.
-
4
Perform the desired amount of repetitions and then rest. For most exercises, 8 to 12 reps will suffice. Do as many sets as you'd like, but be careful not to burn yourself out with an exercise. Overexertion can do more harm than good.

Tips & Warnings
The two basic types of weight-lifting equipment are free weights and machines. For beginners, machines can be very handy and helpful as their design assists with proper form.
Use safety mechanisms if the machine has them. Squat rigs and leg presses often have safety catches in case the weight is dropped. They often are latches that need to be adjusted, so make sure they are in place before starting the exercises.
If you're not sure how something works, don't start pushing or pulling. This could be bad for the machine or result in an injury. If there aren't instructions, ask for help.
