How to Block on Skype

Skype, a popular Internet phone service available to the public, may put you in touch with people whose company you don't necessarily enjoy. In case you decide you don't want to have contact with another user anymore---or worse, if another user is harassing you---Skype provides you with the ability to block people and keep them from contacting you over the site ever again.

Instructions

  1. Blocking a person on your contacts list

      Open your list of Skype contacts and find the name of the contact you wish to block from your contacts list.

      Right-click on the contact you want to block. From the menu that appears, select "Block this contact" from the menu.

      A window will appear asking whether you want to remove the person from your contact list. Left-click on "Remove from your contact list," then click the "Block" button at the bottom of the window. Skype will then block the contact.

    Blocking strangers from contacting you

      Click on the "Tools" menu from the main window, then click on Options.

      Click on the "Privacy" tab on the window that appears.

      Click the button that reads "people in my Contact list only" for each interaction you don't want strangers to use. You may apply this setting for calls, video and instant messages on Skype.

      Click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have an online presence such as a website or a social network, ask people who want to add you on Skype to tell you who they are, so you don't block them.

  • Even better, have others give you their Skype names, which will allow you to them to your contact list.

  • Do not accidentally block people with whom you want to keep in contact.
