Instructions

    • 1

Sand down the existing counter tops with the 100-grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections in the wood. The wood should be nice and smooth when this is done.

Wipe the wood with a dry rag to remove dust particles after sanding.

    • 2

Apply the wood stain to the wood with a paint brush. Begin at one end, and slowly work your way to the other side of the wood, brushing in the same direction as the grain. Let the stain soak into the wood for a few seconds, and then wipe the excess stain away with the cotton cloth. The goal is to let each section of wood soak in the same amount of stain for the same amount of time.

    • 3

Let the stain completely dry. This may take a few hours.

    • 4

Once the stain is dry, apply a coat of wood sealant with the paint brush. Start in the same place as you started the stain, and apply the sealant with the grain. Work your way completely across the wood, and then let the sealant dry.

    • 5

Sand down any imperfections in the dried coat of sealant with the 240-grit sand paper. Make sure the wood is smooth.

Wipe the wood with a dry rag to remove dust particles after sanding.

    • 6

Apply the wood varnish as a top coat over the sanded sealant. Start at the same place as the stain and the sealant, and apply the varnish with the grain of the wood. Once the varnish is completely dry you can begin to use your countertop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the area you are working in is well ventilated because the stains have chemicals that can emit toxic fumes.

  • Keep a box of latex gloves handy. These gloves are disposable and will keep the chemicals off of your bare skin.

  • Be sure to thoroughly clean the room after sanding to avoid getting dust in the stain, which will cause imperfections.
