Growing tomatoes in hanging pots is a simple way to garden in a small space. Because hanging pots usually are used for flowers and ferns, it's best to opt for small varieties such as cherry and grape tomatoes. Larger types likely will be too heavy and require too much space for a hanging pot to support.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large hanging pot (at least 12 inches)
  • Pot liner
  • Potting soil mix
  • Spade
  • Seedlings
  • Liquid tomato fertilizer
  1. Step 1

Line a large hanging pot with a porous pot liner. Make sure the pot has drainage holes on its underside and that water can pass easily through the liner. Soggy soil can severely damage tomatoes.

  2. Step 2

Fill the lined pot about 3/4 of the way with a potting soil mix designed for container gardening. These mixtures often contain the nutrients that the plant needs to develop.

  3. Step 3

Dig a small hole in the center of the dirt and place the seedling in the hole. Fill the pot to about an inch from the top rim with potting soil mix, then pat down. Water thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Hang the potted seedling in a warm place with plenty of sun. Water daily in the mornings to keep the soil moist and cool.

  5. Step 5

Fertilize the hanging tomato plant about once a week using a liquid tomato fertilizer. Hanging pots tend to lose soil nutrients fairly quickly, so its important to replenish them for healthy fruit.
