How to Do Your Hair Like Hermione

Save

In the Harry Potter film series, Hermione Granger is likely as famous for her voluminous curls as she is for her spell-casting abilities. Emma Watson's character transitions her wild ringlets into relaxed, beachy waves as the series goes on. The style is a great way to emphasize natural curls, or add texture to fine hair. Take on Hermione's textured waves, whether you're headed to potions class, or math class.

Tip

  • This style works best on hair that is naturally curly or wavy, with a layer to control bulk. Have your stylist cut your hair to shoulder length, with one layer that is an inch shorter than the rest.

Things You'll Need

  • Volume-enhancing shampoo
  • Volume-enhancing conditioner
  • Hair oil
  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Heat-protectant spray
  • Hair clip
  • 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" curling iron
  • Natural-bristle brush
  • Sea salt spray

Step 1

Wash your hair with a volume-enhancing shampoo and conditioner. Products containing sea salt work best, as they add lift and texture to all hair types.

Step 2

Pour a dime-sized amount of hair oil into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Work the oil through the bottom 3 inches of your hair, to tame frizz and add shine.

Tip

Step 3

Comb your hair from root to tip with a wide-tooth comb to remove any tangles. Position the tail end of a wide-tooth comb at the edge of your hairline, above the outermost corner of your right or left eye. Drag it back until you reach the crown of your head to create a deep side part. Allow your hair to air dry, to enhance your natural hair texture.

Step 4

Spritz your dry hair from root to tip with a heat protectant. Use a mist formula to avoid weighing hair down.

Step 5

Place one thumb above each ear and drag them towards the back of your head until they meet. Clip all the hair above your thumbs to the top of your head.

Step 6

Heat up your curling iron. Use the low-heat setting if you have fine hair, and the medium setting for coarse hair.

Step 7

Pick up the 1-inch-wide section of hair closest to your ear on your left side. Hold the iron vertically next to the section. Wrap the hair tightly around the wand from root to tip, away from your face. Hold it there for 10 seconds, and release it. Continue until you have curled all of the hair on your left side in 1-inch sections, and repeat on your right side.

Step 8

Release your hair from the clip, and repeat the process until all of your hair has been curled, except for your bangs if applicable.

Step 9

Spritz the bottom 3 inches of your hair with a sea salt spray. Gently brush your hair from root to tip with a natural-bristle brush. The salt spray will help to transform the curls into waves, and keep them intact throughout the day.

Step 10

Use the wide-tooth comb to comb your bangs to the side opposite your deep part, so that they fall across the outer edge of your eyebrow. Avoid heat styling your bangs, as Hermione’s took on a natural wave.

Tip

  • Freshen your curls up throughout the day by spritzing them with sea salt spray. Sea salt spray will add texture, and prevent even fine and straight hair from becoming too soft and losing shape. If the ends look dry, apply a dime-sized amount of the lightweight oil to add shine.
