How to Create Mylar Patterns

Transparent Mylar sheets are thin polyester sheets that you can use to trace designs and make craft patterns. Mylar works very similarly to tracing paper but is more versatile because it can stick to objects.

Things You'll Need

• Original pattern
• Felt-tip pen
• Invisible tape
• Craft knife or scissors
• Markers or paint

Instructions

1. Place the Mylar sheet over the pattern you want to copy. You also can create an original pattern on paper or take something from an existing object or picture.

2. Tape the Mylar to the pattern if necessary.

3. Trace the pattern onto the Mylar sheet with a felt-tip pen.

4. Photocopy the original pattern so you have a master if something happens to the Mylar. This is important if you're tracing a pattern from an object and not a paper image.

5. Cut the Mylar in the pattern you traced, creating a template.

6. Tape the Mylar template on the new object you want to draw the pattern on (glass, ceramic, wood or paper).

7. Use a pencil or marker to trace the outlines from the template. Color in the pattern with paint or markers.
